Frequently Asked Questions
What can FieldTag do?
FieldTag is a toolkit for HVAC, plumbing and electrical pros: calculators (load calculation, charge, flue sizing, critical readings, SEER savings, repair vs. replace, nitrogen test, wire size, voltage imbalance, Ohm's law, loan, unit converter), field-guide reference tables, and a scanner that decodes equipment data tags.
How accurate are the calculators?
Calculators give estimates from the inputs you enter, and reference tables are published references. Always confirm results against your local code, the equipment manufacturer's instructions, and your own judgment — code compliance and final equipment sizing are the technician's responsibility.
Why is a calculator using a different location or hours than I expected?
Location-based calculators (load, cooling and heating hours, flue altitude) use the job location you select, or your device location if you allow it. You can change the location on any tool with Select Location, and turn auto-fill off in Settings → Location. Location is used only to fill in climate and altitude values — never for ads.
Where do my calculations and reports go?
Open a job before you start a calculator and its work is saved to that job. Without a job, a tool's entries are temporary and FieldTag will ask before you leave. Every tool can export and share a report.
Do I need an account?
Yes. A free account (Sign in with Apple, Google, or email) keeps your jobs, decoded scan data, favorites and settings in sync across your devices. You can delete your account and its data any time in Settings → Delete Account.
How do I scan an equipment tag?
Open FieldTag, tap the scan tile, then choose Take a Photo to use your camera, Upload an Image to use a photo from your library, or Enter Manually to type in a model and serial number. Scanning needs a physical equipment data tag. FieldTag will decode the tag and return full specs within seconds.
What types of equipment can FieldTag decode?
FieldTag decodes data tags on HVAC units (air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, air handlers), water heaters, electrical panels, and appliances. It reads age, capacity, efficiency ratings, refrigerant type, electrical requirements, and more.
What's included in the free version?
The free version includes every calculator and field-guide reference, equipment tag scanning (50 scans a day), jobs, and report export and sharing. It is supported by ads.
What does FieldTag Pro include?
Pro includes everything in Free with no ads, and puts your business information (company name, phone and license number) on every report you export. Pro is $4.99/month or $49.99/year (about 17% less than paying monthly), auto-renewing until cancelled. See our Terms.
How do I cancel my Pro subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through your Apple ID. To cancel, go to Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions on your iPhone and tap FieldTag Pro. You can cancel at any time and you'll retain Pro access until the end of the billing period.
The scan result looks wrong — what should I do?
Make sure the data tag is well-lit and the photo is in focus. For best results, get close to the tag and make sure the entire label is visible. If the model or serial number was misread, use the Edit & Re-scan option on the results screen to correct it manually. If you continue having issues, email us and include a photo of the tag.
Is my data stored or shared?
Tag photos are sent to OpenAI's API to be decoded, your scan photos stay on your device, and decoded data, jobs and results sync through our database provider (Supabase). We do not sell your data. Full details of what we collect and which services process it are in our Privacy Policy.
Is FieldTag available on Android?
FieldTag is currently available on iOS. Android support is in development and coming soon. Check back or email us to be notified when it launches.
